Unreleased: Antique Victorian Ghost Niello Star Locket Pendant

This charming Victorian star textured locket is a true rarity, both for its celestial theme and as a unique example of Niello craftsmanship. The style of niello was popular during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837–1901). It involved carving intricate designs into a base metal, then applying a dramatic, dark alloy inlay layer over the top. Polishing then created a smooth finish, highlighting the raised pattern against the design. This particular piece has been affectionately named "ghost niello" because the inlay layer has been lost over time. What remains is a beautiful, textured, 3D-effect piece featuring the ghost of a technique that is not only a century old in the context of this locket, but ancient in origin.
